Tired of toothpaste and mouthwashes – the toxic fluoride, the dodgy chemicals and the ghastly taste? What if I told you that turmeric could whiten your teeth? I thought it sounded outrageous too seeing as turmeric seems to stain everything else but decided to give it a bash. I wasn’t going anywhere and at worst my husband would have to put up with me glowing in the dark.
I wet my toothbrush and stuck it into the turmeric powder and brushed hopefully. It didn’t taste too bad. I rinsed and looked in the mirror, not expecting much and was gobsmacked! My teeth were definitely, undeniably whiter – so much so that I spent the rest of the night admiring them.
I was on a roll and tried activated charcoal next. I know both of these are incredibly messy but they are also surprisingly good at whitening teeth. They might stain your skin and clothes but weirdly enough they remove stains from teeth. Go figure.
You can use either ingredient alone or if you want to get a bit fancier, you can make your own toothpaste by incorporating the antibacterial talents of the ever-useful Coconut Oil into the mix. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and charcoal is the universal poison antidote because it adsorbs toxins – meaning that it attracts heavy metals, viruses, bacteria and fungi due to its enormous surface area.
Here are a couple of recipes to try. Always store your mixture in a clean glass jar and use a spatula or knife to decant a bit onto the toothbrush rather than dip the toothbrush into the mixture.
Warning: be sure to rinse the basin and the outside of your mouth really well.
