What could be more natural than a lemon? Not only do lemons smell amazing, they have all sorts of uses in the chemical-free home, from sanitising to bleaching, cleaning, odour busting and grime removal.

Try these tips for lemon cleaning:

  • Still using bleach? Why not substitute 1 cup of lemon juice? Lemon juice is kinder and safer for delicate fabrics than commercial bleach. It works just as well but with none of the harsh toxins. And then there’s the smell factor – everything will come out with a fresh and lemony scent.
  • Underarm stains are no match for equal parts lemon juice and water rubbed into the area.
  • Use half a lemon as a sponge. Simply cut a lemon in half, take the pips out with the tip of a sharp knife and use it to remove stains and grime build up from taps, shower doors and tiles. Use both sides of the lemon – the flesh and the skin.
  • Sprinkle a bit of borax on your lemon ‘sponge’ for tough stains.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon when washing dishes to cut grease.
  • Lemon juice and oil make a good wooden furniture polish. Mix a few tablespoons of lemon juice with ½ cup olive oil or coconut oil and voilà – an all-natural, sweet smelling polish that is kind to your hands, your furniture and the environment.
  • Get rid of fridge odours by soaking a sponge in a bit of lemon juice and leaving it in the fridge for a few hours.
  • Wipe kitchen cutting boards with half a lemon to sanitise and refresh them.
  • Clean tarnished brass, copper and stainless steel – mix lemon juice and baking powder to form a paste. Rub on, leave for a few minutes, then wash off and rub with a soft cloth.
