foundation powder and brush

Run out of foundation or simply don’t want to use the store variety anymore? You might be thinking that your only choice is just to go bare faced and be done with it but if you step right this way and into the kitchen, there’s another, entirely natural route. We already covered DIY mascara but that is the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

Foundation:

Natural foundation is quick and easy and the fabulous thing about making your own is that you can play around with shades and ingredients until you find something you like. In fact, experimentation is key – don’t be afraid to try different ingredients, these are just guidelines.

Choose one of these for the base:

  • Arrowroot powder
  • Organic corn starch
  • Rice powder

Add:

  • Cocoa powder for depth and darkness
  • Cinnamon for glow
  • Turmeric for yellow tones (go easy on this one as it stains)
  • Ginger for orange / red
  • Nutmeg for golden, sun-kissed
  • Bentonite clay / kelp powder for olive tone

Start with a bit of the base powder and then add cocoa powder. This might be all you need. If not, add any of the other ingredients, a little at a time until you get the right mix.

Tip: before applying, wash your face with warm to hot water and then apply coconut oil, olive oil or even some raw honey to damp, warm skin. This will make the foundation ‘stick’ better. Also, be sure to apply the foundation in circles. Use a nice, thick brush or a small piece of cotton wool.

You can even make a liquid foundation by using the above recipe with olive oil.

Blush / bronzer:

Add one of these to the foundation or use on their own:

  • Paprika
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Nutmeg
