The respiratory system, made up of the mouth, nose, trachea, lungs and diaphragm, is responsible for getting oxygen into the blood and removing carbon dioxide in a gaseous exchange process called respiration.

ASTHMA

The classic symptoms of asthma are chest tightness, difficulty breathing and wheezing accompanied by coughing, caused by inflammation and narrowing of the airways in the lungs.

BRONCHITIS

When the air passages between nose and lungs become irritated through viral, bacterial or other means, they become inflamed or infected and the result is called bronchitis.

CONGESTION

Congestion (aka blocked nose) occurs when the nasal passages swell due to inflamed blood vessels. Causes include allergic reactions, viral and bacterial infections and nasal polyps.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects the secretory glands and is characterised by the production of thick, sticky mucous which can lead to infection and breathing problems.

Sinusitis is inflammation of the nasal sinuses which causes headaches, congestion and often pain. Often thought of as a bacterial problem, most cases of chronic sinusitis may actually be an immune response to a fungus.
